Furies of Calderon - Jim Butcher This series was written on a bet that stories based on bad/tired ideas could still be good stories. The ideas were lost Roman legions and Pokemon. Judging by this book all I can say is long live well written books based on bad ideas and death to poorly written books with great ideas!

Good characters and relationships, I especially liked the way the student/teacher link between Fidelias and Amara was played out. The action is very good, both individual and army battles. I would have liked a more thorough explanation of the magic system but hopefully that'll come in later books and it's obvious that there is a logical thought out magic system.
Ragnarok - Patrick A. Vanner This is the author's first book and it shows however I think there's also some promise and I will be reading the next book in the series when it's released. There's plenty of action that's well done and if starship battles are your thing then the pages will fly by but characterisation could be better. A few characters are completely one-dimensional and the author hasn't mastered the art of making you really care about characters in a book.

One for readers who like space battles and don't expect too much in the way of characterisation or plot.

How Firm a Foundation - David Weber, Stephen Youll, Ellisa Mitchell A welcome return to form after the previous book in the series which just moved too slowly.
Hexed - Kevin Hearne Great read, my one gripe about the first book in this series (Hounded) was that it never felt like the main character, Atticus, was ever in truly mortal danger. This is rectified in Hexed which also carries on the best bits of Hounded. Atticus' wit is still present and the interaction between him and his hound (Oberon) is brilliant.
Dreadnaught - Jack Campbell The worst part of the book is that the story ends on a bit of cliffhanger, something that I hate.
